Installing the Theme

Installation

In order to begin installing Ruby theme, you need the latest version of WordPress. Please, visit WordPress.org and download the newest WordPress package.

If you aren't familiar with WordPress installation, please take a look here: WordPress installation

Please remember, our support does not include WordPress installation.

Once you downloaded and set it up, you are ready to go.

Unzip Ruby theme package that you have downloaded from Themeforest. Within the unnzipped package, you will find a few folders. The most important is a zipped folder named ruby.zip (Attention! Do not unzip this package).

Follow these steps in order to install the theme:

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard and go to
    Appearance > Themes
  2. Click the Add New link and then click the Upload Theme button at the top.

  3. Click the Browse... button, choose your ruby.zip package and press the Install Now button.

  4. After installation process is completed, click the Activate link or go to Appearance > Themes to switch the theme to Ruby.

This is a list of plugins that are recommended to use with Ruby theme.

  • WP Instagram Widget - is a no fuss WordPress widget to showcase your latest Instagram pictures
  • Vafpress Post Formats UI - an admin interface and structured post meta for WordPress post formats
  • WP Retina 2x - this plugin creates the image files required by the High-DPI devices and displays them to your visitors accordingly
  • MailChimp for WordPress - a newsletter system to help you manage your subscriptions
  • Photo Swipe - Lightbox function will allow you to show your images with nice zoom
  • WP Review - Create reviews! Choose different symbol and write review about anything.
  • Envato Market - The Envato Market plugin can install WordPress themes and plugins purchased from ThemeForest

Plugins Installation

When you first activate Ruby, you should see a notification message at the top of your WordPress dashboard.

You will have to choose which plugin you want to install.

Follow these steps in order to install the plugins:

  1. Click on the Begin installing plugins link

  2. Check the box next to the plugin name and select Install option from the dropdown menu. Finally, click on the Apply button

  3. After the installation is complete, you should see a message

Import Demo Content

After the first installation, you won't see all extra content that you've seen on the live demo. In order to see it, you will have to import demo content through the WordPress dashboard.

Follow these steps in order to import demo content:

  1. Go to Tools > Import and choose WordPress link

  2. Next, choose a file from your computer (demo content folder) and click Tools > Upload file and import button

  3. After the operation is complete, you should see a message

Missing Style Sheet Error

Missing style sheet error when installing the theme is a common issue. This error message does not mean that the theme you have purchased is broken, it simply means it has been uploaded incorrectly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to Create a Post

We implemented 4 different post formats:

  • Standard post
  • Gallery post
  • Video post
  • Audio post

If you want to activate these custom posts, you will have to install and activate Vafpress Post Formats UI plugin.

If you want to create a post, just go to your WordPress dashboard and choose Posts > Add New from the left menu.

There are 4 different types of post (image works like a standard post type).

  • Standard post - a standard post is the default post type from WordPress. You can add featured image and text.

  • Gallery post - a gallery post is an upgraded standard post but you can add more than 1 picture. Text is also allowed.

  • Video post - a video post type displays a video instead of a picture. You can show a video from Youtube or Vimeo. All you have to do is copy the link from the browser address and paste it in the special place under the post title, named Video URL.

    If you want to use a different type of video then you will have to use a WordPress Embed feature. Here is a explanation how to use it: Link

  • Audio post - audio post type displays a box of shared music or audio instead of a picture. You can copy a track from SoundCloud or Spotify. All you have to do is copy the link from the browser address and paste it in the special place under the post title, named Audio URL.

    If you want to use a different type of video then you will have to use a WordPress Embed feature. Here is a explanation how to use it: Link

Before publishing your post, don’t forget to write your post title, choose category, etc. Once you are fnished with your post, you have to click the Publish button.

How to Create a Page

A static page is a great option to show your About Me or Contact page.

In order to create a new page, go to your WordPress dashboard and click on Pages > Add New

Enter page title and description. You can also switch to a different page template. You can choose between Default template, Full Width template and Sidebar Left template. The difference between all these templates is that you can show a different placement for your widgets.

NOTE: Don’t forget to add some widgets to your sidebar (if you choose to have a sidebar). If you want to do this just go to Appearance > Widgets and drag some widgets.

Creating a new menu is very simple. Follow these steps:

  1. In your WordPress dashboard go to Appearance > Menus
  2. Select a "create a new menu" link and choose a name for your new menu

  3. On the left side you will find 4 different (or more) drop-down boxes:

    • Pages
    • Posts
    • Custom links
    • Categories

  4. Expand one of these boxes and drag your items to your menu or click the Add to menu button.

NOTE: If you want to add a link to your Home page, named Home, you need to select Custom Links drop-down box. Enter your home page’s URL into the URL field and choose a name.

Setting Up a Homepage

By default, the homepage will be the page that displays all of your blog posts. Your homepage probably will be the first page that users will see, so it is important for you to choose the right layout and features.

In order to customize your homepage look, colors etc., go to your WordPress dashboard > Appearance > Customize. This link will redirect you to WordPress Live Preview (it's a default WordPress feature).

All Ruby’s features are based on WordPress Live Preview and every change you will do, you will see live.

If you want to change your homepage layout just expand the Layout Settings tab and from the drop-down list below, choose your favorite layout.

As you can see, this change is also possible for Archive page and Post page.

Setting Up Custom Colors

You have to options. You can choose between Predefined Color Skins and you can set up your own colors.

If you want to use one of the predefined color skins, just go to WordPress Customizer and choose Skin Color Options > Predefined Color Skins > Choose Skin

You can also set up your own colors and you can do this in the same place (WordPress Customizer > Skin Color Options)

Setting Up a Home Slider

Ruby’s slider is completely customizable. It’s not connected directly to post feed so it means that you can show whatever you want on your slides. Of course, you can connect your slides with your posts if you want to.

To set up your slider, in your WordPress Customizer choose a Home Slider from listed tabs. Remember, you have to be on your homepage to see the Home Slider tab.

Before you add a new slide, go to Slider main settings and check Auto play feature if you want to play slides automatically.

To add a new slide, go back to Home Slider tab and choose a Slide # to customize it.

You can add new picture, change the title, add simple description or a button with a link to your post. See the picture below.

A sidebar is an area that displays widgets on the right or left side of your main blog area which contains posts.

You can choose if you want to use sidebar or not. To see what is best for you, go to WordPress Customizer and from the listed tabs choose Layout Settings. Inside Layout Settings look for a Home page layout drop-down menu and choose the best option for you.

To add, remove or edit your sidebar widgets, you have to, in your WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Widgets > Main Sidebar

Here, you can click choose the widget from the list and drag it to the desired place (Main Sidebar in this case). After you add new widget, you can sort them and change the order. See the example below.

You can also manage your widgets directly from WordPress Customizer. You can just click the Manage in Customizer button. The difference is that you will see everything live.

How to Add Social Icons

To set up your social icons, in WordPress Customizer go to Social Media tab.

Choose the icons you want to use by pasting links to your social profiles in the right places.

These icons will be displayed in the top bar and in the Ruby Social Widget (if you decide to use it). You have the possibility to turn them off by clicking the Hide Social in Header option located in the Layout Settings tab in the WordPress Customizer. See the example below.

NOTE: If you want to display social icons in the sidebar, all you have to do is to add Ruby’s widget (Ruby Social Widget) to the Main Sidebar.

Widgets Overview

Here is a list of widgets included in Ruby theme.

  • About Me widget - This custom widget displays informations about the author. It contains a picture placeholder. You can use it to upload a picture from your computer or paste directly from WordPress media. It also contains a place for your name, text and button.
  • Archives widget - This custom widget displays your blog archives in a better, modern way.
  • Full Latest Posts widget - This custom widget is an alternate version for Latest Posts widget. It displays latest posts from your blog. It contains a big preview picture of your featured post image, title and publication date.
  • Latest Posts widget - This custom widget is an alternate version for Full Latest Posts widget. It displays latest posts from your blog. It contains a small preview picture of your featured post image, title and publication date.
  • Post Like widget - This custom widget displays likes that your posts get from your visitors.
  • Recent Comments widget - This custom widget displays recent comments that your posts get from your visitors.
  • Social widget - This custom widget displays social media icons.

You have 3 custom things to set up.

  • Instagram feed area – to set up your Instagram feed area, you have to set up a sidebar named Footer Instagram and add a widget to display your Instagram. You can do this in WordPress Customizer. See the screen below:

    NOTE: The widget is simply named Instagram and to use it, you have to install and activate plugin called WP Instagram Widget.

  • Widgets areas – to set up your widgets in the footer you have to go to WordPress Customizer > Widgets. You will find 3 separated footers (Footer 1, Footer 2, Footer 3). You can choose any widget you want and place it there.
  • Copyright area - to set up your copyright area in the footer you have to go to WordPress Customizer > Footer Copyright. Change the default text to any you need.

Credits

In default version of Ruby, all images are used just for Preview Purpose Only. Images rights are not included with this theme. If you would like to use any of the images found in the default version of Ruby, you have to contact with Ruslan Safarov.

In light version of Ruby, all images are used just for Preview Purpose Only. However, all images can be found at unsplash.com. All images are free to download.

In gaming version of Ruby, all images are the property of their respective owners and are used just for Preview Purpose Only
